What is the Best Snowboard Ski Goggle Lens for Low Light Night Riding?

Night RidingNight riding can be one of the most fun activities to partake in. I've gone maybe 10+ this winter and have had to do some serious thinking about what kind of lens I needed to bring in order to see the most clearly. Night riding can be fun but dangerous at the same time, especially being around other people who may not be able to see as well as during the day.

Night riding should be treated like driving -- always be on the look out and remain defensive at all times. You never know if somebody isn't paying attention or doesn't have the right goggle lens for optimal vision during the low light conditions. We've listed the best type of lens for you to use as well as some brands we recommend. If you need an overall guide for lens tints, check out that post here.

What Color\Type of Lens is Best for Night Riding?

To answer your question quickly, the absolute best lens to purchase is: a clear lens. You can do so by purchasing either a pair of snow goggles that include one or a replacement clear lens for the particular pair of goggles you currently own. Other lenses that work well with night and aren't as boring looking (if you're concerned with that) as clear lenses are yellow lenses.

A clear lens is the most optimal for night riding, allowing most light to enter your goggles to see what's in front of you.

These types of lenses are stated to be the best for low light conditions because of their Visible Light Transmission (VLT). The lens filters and emphasizes certain colors in your vision. The VLT is the amount of light that reaches your eyes. These lighter tints we have recommended allow more light to pass through your lens, because at night, you need as much as possible light transmission to see what's in front of you. The same can be said for the opposite: if you need a day time lens, you need as least light to pass through as possible so you're not blinded (these don't have to be as strict as night riding lenses).

  • Clear lens: VLT of 84-99%
  • Yellow lens: VLT of 68%
